Baptist Heart Transplant Program Under Strain

Last November, the Federal government warned Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center that it was not performing enough heart transplants. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services, or CMS, says transplant centers must perform a certain number of operations for surgeons to maintain their skills. The agency told hospital officials to present a plan to fix the problem, or else face sanctions. Baptist did submit a plan, and it looks as if CMS will approve it. But the situation has exposed long-standing problems with the nation's small transplant centers. WFDD's Thibault Worth reports.
