WFU Researchers Find Genetics Hold Promise in Preventing Cyber Attacks

February 15, 2012 | Keri Brown

Cyber security is an ever changing and growing concern. The most recent figures show attacks against federal government networks rose nearly 40 percent in 2010. In the 2013 federal budget, the Obama Administration is asking for more than a billion dollars to boost cyber security.

But Some Wake Forest University researchers say they have an answer for preventing cyber attacks. They are using genetic algorithms for computer configuration adaptation to increase security.

WFDD’s Keri Brown spoke with Associate Professor of Computer Science at the school, Errin Fulp and Graduate student Michael Crouse to learn more about their Bio - inspired research (Hear more by clicking on the mp3 icon above this story).

The computer science research is funded by a grant from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).

Wake Forest University graduate student Michael Crouse, was recently was named one of the “nation’s top new inventors” by Inventor’s Digest magazine.

Hear his in-depth interview Friday on Voices and Viewpoints about the work that earned him this national recognition.
