An undocumented immigrant activist has ended a hunger strike. 24-year-old Uriel Alberto is out of a Raliegh jail after members of El Cambio, friends and family posted his $7,500 bond on Thursday. He's now resting at home in Winston-Salem.
Two weeks ago, Albierto and two other undocumented immigrant protestors disrupted a special state House committee discussing immigration issues. They stood up and declared themselves to be "undocumented and unafraid."
22-year-old Giovanna Hurtado is Albierto's close friend and was active in securing his release. She says his suffering has done some good. "A lot of people have become aware of the hurdles and plight we have to go through," Hurtado explained. "Also after he did that, the House committee decided it would be good to let people speak from the opposing side in terms of the anti-immigrant laws. The next meeting, they will have spots open for those who are pro-immigrant.
The special state House committee will meet again on March 28 and Hurtado says she'll be there.
