Tear Gas Used in Greensboro Standoff

January 31, 2012 | Keri Brown

Police are still surrounding a house in the city after shots were fired at an officer early Tuesday morning.

According Greensboro Police Chief Ken Miller, just after 5 a.m. police officers were called to 421 Westdale Place responding to a disturbance complaint. When they arrived, they encountered the suspect who was naked standing on the porch. One neighbor said he woke up to the sounds of gunfire.

"The gun shots woke me up and I have been up since 5:30 listening to the police scanner. There's a bunch of cops from about Longview up to Cheryl where is the corner that I live, there's a police hazardous materials truck there and a lot of cops with AR 15's out in front of my house and they won't let anybody go towards that area," said Scott, a neighbor who did not want to give his last name.

Chief Miller said the man went back into the home and fired several shots. He then returned to the porch and fired at the officers with a handgun and shotgun. The officers returned fire. Miller said nobody was struck in the exchange.

Police said contact with the suspect inside the house has been sporadic. The Greensboro News and Record reports that a robot was sent inside the house, but it was tipped over. A first round of tear gas shot inside the house was not successful in getting him out.

Police have blocked Walker Avenue between Elam Avenue and Lindell Road. They are continuing to watch the suspect. They also evacuated 15 to 20 homes in the area. Several area school delayed opening by about two hours Tuesday morning.

The Greensboro Special Response Team and Hostage Negotiation Team are also on the scene.
