Sgt. Mickey Hutchens Funeral ArrangementsOctober 14, 2009 | David FordThe Funeral arrangements for a Winston-Salem police officer killed in the line of duty are now set.
Sgt. Mickey Hutchins died Monday night from wounds he sustained one week ago today. Hutchens was 50 years old.
Tomorrow (Thursday) a public viewing of the body of Sgt. Mickey Hutchens will be held at Wait Chapel on the campus of Wake Forest University , from 2 to 5 p.m during which time Citizens are invited to pay their respects.
Wake Forest University is referring all calls to the City of Winston-Salem - which is organizaing the cermony. City Director of Marketing & Communications Ed McNeal says Thursday is a Public Wake.
Friday--a memorial service for Hutchens will be held at 2:00 in Wait Chapel. It's also open to the public.
Following the public viewing from 6-8 there will be a private time for family and law enforcement officers.
In addidtion Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines is making a special declaration in honor of Sgt. Hutchens. Through Friday the city is in Winston-Salem a period of civic mourning. All city flags will be flown at half staff during this time.
Hutchens was critically injured a week ago today when he responded to a domestic violence call from the Bojangles restaurant on Peters Creek Parkway .
Sgt. Hutchens and Officer Daniel Clark encountered 35-year-old Monte Evans outside the restaurant. Evans had gotten into an argument with his ex-wife, who worked at Bojanges as a manager.
Investigators say after a brief foot chase Evans shot the officers...one bullet penetrated Hutchens' skull, two bullets hit Clark--one in his bullet proof vest and the other in his upper torso.
Police shot and killed Evans at the scene ... Officer Clark was released from the Hospital on Friday. He continues to recouperate at home.
Sgt. Mickey Hutchens was a 27-year-veteran on the force. He is survived by his wife and two adult children.
