The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro received a substantial bequest earlier this year to build a new public park for the city. The donor, long time Greensboro resident Carolyn Weill LeBauer passed away last March.

Walker Sanders, President of the Foundation, says LeBauer’s family members have been supportive of the project.

 “She and her husband didn’t have any children and loved the fact that Greensboro’s parks were always something that everyone was so proud of. She had a beautiful garden herself in her own yard and I think she thought that this would be a great opportunity for the entire city to continue enjoying parks and open space,” says Walker.

Plans for the park are in the earliest stages. It will be called the Carolyn and Maurice LeBauer City Park, but exactly where it will be located and what will be in it hasn’t been determined.  

The foundation is working closely with city leaders to develop the project. Currently, the area around the former YWCA is being considered as a possible site to build the park. Earlier this year, the city of Greensboro purchased the property. Walker says the park would complement another upcoming project.

“The initial concept is that the park be developed adjacent to the new Performing Arts Center. This would allow the park to leverage the activities of the Performing Arts Center. It also allows would allow the Center to benefit from having a large exceptional park,” says Walker.

Walker added, “This truly makes this center for everyone. It focuses on activities for children and families, recreation and education opportunities.”
