Petru Mironescu Part 1September 20, 2007 | Jeff TiberiiOn Monday afternoon, September 17th, Petru Mironescu, a native of Romania and Winston-Salem resident walked out of the justcare facility in Columbia South Carolina. He was freed. The 52-year-old Mironescu had been behind bars for four years. Labeled a gypsy in his home country, due to the color of his skin, the government wanted to punish him for acts against the state, although he claims no crimes were ever committed.
After seeking asylum in the United States, which he was granted nearly 10 years ago, morinescu became a trucker, brought his family to America and found a new life in the Triad. Then, during a routine traffic stop he learned the Romanian government wanted him extradited. For the next four years, a flawed component of the judicial system was exploited. An extradition hearing never came and as deputies from the secretary of state and circuit court judges debated who had the power, Mironescu waited.
On September 6th his lawyer, federal prosecutor Greg Davis, who was assigned to the case, filed a motion to dismiss the charges and case as moot. On Monday the 17th Mironescu was released
In the first of two exclusive interviews, 88.5 WFDD's Jeff Tiberii spoke with Mironescu, a man who served 35 months in the Forsyth County Jail, and this week returned to his family and home in Winston-Salem. This is a glimpse of his story.
