Internationally-known artist Romare Bearden is immortalized in the Black Heritage stamp series.
Monday evening, Winston-Salem State University and the U.S. Postal Service recognized his accomplishments and those of two other African Americans with commemorative postage. The ceremony was held at Diggs Gallery on the university's campus.
Bearden was born in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1911, and moved with his family to New York City as a small child. Growing up amidst the Harlem Renaissance, Bearden was influenced by talented African Americans who wanted to create positive images of their race.
According to WSSU's Diggs Gallery Director Belinda Tate, Bearden is being recognized for his groundbreaking approach to collage and his work in watercolors, oils and other media.
Ebony and Jet magazine publisher John Johnson and former Texas Congresswoman Barbara Jordan were also honored.
