Montgomery County Community in Shock after Shooting Rampage

January 13, 2012 | Keri Brown

Police said a gunman who opened fire at a Montgomery County lumber company targeted four of his co-workers, killing three of them and critically injuring the other person.

The shooter, Ronald Dean Davis, 50, went home after the shooting at the warehouse this morning and shot himself in the head, leaving him critically wounded.

Montgomery County Sheriff Dempsey Owens says police found Davis slumped over on his couch. A handgun and a rambling, vague six-page note was on the couch next to Davis.

Police haven't released the identities of the shooting victims.

The shootings are a shock to many people in the small community of Star. Sherry's Family Restaurant is a few miles away from the lumber company where the shootings took place, and owner Sherry Bennett said she knew one of the victims: Daniel Davis, 31.

"I don't know why he shot him, because as long as I've known him he never had anything bad to say about anyone. He was always quiet, polite and well-mannered. He was a really nice guy," said Bennet. "Everyone that has come in says they are shocked."

Bennett said many community members are banding together to offer support to Davis's family.

"You always hear about it but you don't expect it to hit home. Daniel and his father were in here eating last night - they came in here every day. I keep thinking about Daniel because he never got married or had a chance to have kids. And his family, the effect that it will have on them, it's just a terrible tragedy," said Bennet.

Police said about 16 other employees were at the McBride Lumber Co. in central North Carolina when Davis started firing with a shotgun. Police said he was a disgruntled employee, but they have not said what he was upset over.
