Ministers Use Pulpit to Oppose Amendment OneMarch 25, 2012 | Some Charlotte ministers will use their pulpits to oppose Amendment One. The measure would create a state constitutional ban on same-sex marriage and civil unions. It's on North Carolina's May 8th ballot.
Today, about 30 ministers representing a dozen faiths will preach against this proposed measure. They argue the amendment would damage the state's reputation as an inclusive environment. But North Carolina's two Catholic bishops say marriage between a man and a woman is sanctified by God and is the best way to raise children.
Gay marriage is illegal in North Carolina, but supporters of Amendment One want the constitution to specifically ban it because they say it will further protect traditional marriage.
