Liberian PresidentJuly 13, 2006 | Audrey FanninA group of area leaders have formed a commission to prepare for a visit from the president of Liberia in early 2007. Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf is Africa's first elected female head of state. Although she initially supported Charles Taylor's bloody uprising against President Samuel Doe in 1990, she later opposed Taylor, and ran against him in 1997. Taylor won that election and charged her with treason. Still, she campaigned against him, eventually winning the presidency in 2005. Earlier this year, Johnson-Sirleaf appeared before a joint meeting of Congress, seeking American support for her country. During her visit, pastor Dr. Seth Lartey of Goler Memorial AME Zion Church in Winston-Salem had a chance to meet with her.
