Medge Owen, Associate Professor of Obstetric Anesthesiology at Wake Forest University, was inspired to start Kybele in 2001 after her experience as a Fulbright Scholar in Turkey, where she developed an obstetric anesthesia unit. The organization's name comes from the ancient Anatolian goddess of fertility and childbirth - a figurine even portrays her giving birth. Dr. Owen visited WFDD after a recent trip to Egypt, where she was exploring setting up a Kybele project in Cairo.
