The Business Report
Investigating Project Top Drawer and a Search for the Perfect MegaPark

March 9, 2012 | David Ford

In today’s Business Report, the Piedmont Triad Partnership (PTP)'s  decade-long search for a mega-site to attract automobile manufacturers may be coming to a fruitful end in Moore and Montgomery Counties. And a Wisconsin-based furniture giant once again has its eyes on Davie County’s “Project Top Drawer”.

The PTP hopes to soon be in a position to compete with Virginia, Kentucky, Alabama and Tennessee for the largest and most sought-after projects --automobile plants included. Contending for those projects and the hundreds of jobs that come with them means finding huge tracks of land suitable for industrial use. Under consideration is the 3,200-acre Heart of North Carolina MegaPark that straddles Montgomery and Moore counties, but major infrastructure changes will need to take place to make the land viable.

Meanwhile, a return of the furniture industry, 1,000 jobs and a possible 200 million dollar investment are enough to grab the full attention of State legislators, economic development officials and the Golden Leaf Foundation. The Business Journal reports that Ashley Furniture has renewed its interest in 300 acres of land northwest of Bixby along Baltimore Road. Property owner Jeff Schwarz says if Ashley wants the property, "they've got it."

Business Journal contributing writer and Wake Forest University Journalism Program Director Justin Catanoso talks about the land, and lots of it, with WFDD’s David Ford.
