Glenn High School Sophomore Commits SuicideApril 16, 2010 | Kathryn MobleyAccording to school officials, Ashley Rogers hanged herself in her Kernersville home Wednesday night. They say she killed herself as a result of receiving harassing text messages from other students.
WFDD's Kathryn Mobley spoke with Winston-Salem Forsyth County School Spokesman Theo Helms. He says now investigators are checking computers and cell phones involved in the case.
Last year, the North Carolina General Assembly passed a cyber-bullying law making it a misdemeanor to use various computer activities to intimidate, harass or torment a minor.
Rogers' death occurs three months after the suicide of another high school freshman in Massachusetts.
School officials say Phoebe Prince endured months of taunts and threats after she briefly dated a popular boy. 15-year-old Prince hanged herself at home on January 14th.
Six of her classmates now face charges.
In October 2006 in Missouri, Megan Meier committed suicide by hanging herself in her closet. Meier was the target of cyber bullying via her MySpace account.
