Email Scam Targets Triad Businesses

December 7, 2011 | Keri Brown

The Central N.C. chapter of the national business group says its members are getting emails with the subject line "Complaint from your Customer."

The emails contain a fake Better Business Bureau address and the logo and address of the Council of Better Business Bureau, the umbrella organization for the BBB.

The latest wave of e-mails started Tuesday. President and CEO of the BBB, Kevin Hinterberger says the Greensboro office has received more than a dozen calls.

"The situation is when people do click on this link, the scammers are trying to get access to people's computers and then download financial information. What we are urging people to do is to delete the email, don't open it and if you have a question you can contact the BBB directly and you can forward the email to us so we can forward it to the Council of Better Business Bureaus or you can send it to them directly."

Hinterberger said if the emails are opened, a virus scan should be run on the computer system.
