Caterpillar Inc. Sets Long-Term Sights on the Triad

Caterpillar is betting big on its Global Mining division. This summer it purchased Ohio-based mining equipment manufacturer Bucyrus International for a whopping $8.8 billion, and on Wednesday, crowds of dignitaries and officials turned out for the grand opening of Caterpillar’s sparkling new mining equipment component plant in Winston-Salem.

The ceremony took place in the shadows of the now-vacant Dell building next door, leaving some in attendance to contemplate that company’s all-to-brief history in the Triad.

In this week’s Business Report, Business Journal Contributing Writer and Director of the Journalism Program at Wake Forest University Justin Catanoso puts Caterpillar’s latest move in perspective.  He spoke with WFDD’s David Ford.
