The Business ReportA 175,000 -Square-Foot Crown Jewel for North Carolina A&T State UniversityNovember 4, 2011 | David FordNorth Carolina A&T State University is preparing to say goodbye to its campus "living room", the Memorial Student Union built in 1969. The 67,000-square-foot building will be replaced with a new $90 million dollar, 175,000-square-foot student gathering place designed by Victor Vines of Vines Architecture in Raleigh and Rick Kuhn of Cannon Design in Boston. The new A&T student union will serve as a bridge between the north and south halves of campus, and it will finally provide the necessary space and natural light sorely missing from its predecessor.
Meanwhile, one construction leads to another at the intersection of Interstate 40 and Union Cross Road. With the planned $53 million Union Cross Road widening project all but assured, a request to rezone 13 acres there from residential single family to general business district marks a big step toward future development just outside the town of Kernersville. The location is home to FedEx and a soon-to-be Caterpillar plant. It's becoming one of Forsyth County's most rapidly growing areas with a nearly 15 percent increase in population over the past decade.
On Thursday, The Business Journal Editor Mark Sutter spoke about both Triad construction proposals with WFDD's David Ford. Full archive of The Business Report >>
