The Winston-Salem Theatre Alliance goes public beginning Friday night, September 14 at 8:00pm at the Theatre Alliance building on Northwest Boulevard in Winston-Salem.

One of the world’s leading art magazines, artforum, has written glowingly about its exhibitions. It’s Curator of Contemporary Art has won the prestigious Emily Hall Tremaine Exhibition Award, and was recently chosen from an international field of candidates to take part in curatorial residencies in Gwangju, South Korea and Berlin, Germany. So, is it MoMA in New York? How about The National Museum of Modern Art at the Centre Pompidou in Paris? Nope, it’s the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, North Carolina—thank you very much—and its award-winning curator Steven Matijcio.

On Sunday, September 16, at 5:00 p.m. SECCA will be closing Steven's acclaimed Paperless exhibit to make way for the new, so you've got just ten days left to view this amazing FREE exhibit.

On September 14, at 7:00 p.m. SECCA presents its new opening. The exhibition Anne Kesler Shields: A Fifty Year Retrospective will celebrate the artist’s career and it will remain on display through January 6, 2013. Organized by SECCA, and guest Curated by Tom Patterson, the opening is FREE with cash bar and light refreshments served as well. You can enjoy a tour of both exhibitions conducted by Steven Matijcio during SECCA’s first fundraiser tea Sunday, September 16 at 2 p.m. Seating is limited to 36 guests.

Carol Roan is an Indiana University graduate where she also earned a Master’s degree in Vocal performance. After years concertizing in operas and oratorios throughout the Northeast, Carol began teaching voice in 1970. Her students have ranged from soprano Amanda Pabyan and the Indie Rock band The Cobbs, to singer/songwriter Ryan Tennis. Carol’s series of six classes titled Singing for the “Tone Deaf” begins Monday, October 15, at the Center for Musical Excellence at Salem College. More information is available at (336) 721-2636.

Jeff Polish spent years doing genetics research and he eventually went into teaching, but all along the way he maintained a deep love for good storytelling. In 2008, Jeff’s growing fascination with personal stories told by interesting people led him to form The Monti. It’s a non-profit whose mission is to create community through the telling of stories, from the hilarious to the tragic and everything in between. Each month Jeff invites ordinary folks to tell their stories without notes in front of an audience. Coming up Friday night, September 14, at 8:00p.m., it’s The Monti season opener at The Arts Center, 300-G East Main Street in Carrboro. On the bill will be Daniel Wallace, Jill McCorkle, Lisa Mecham and Carter Kersh.
