The Christmas Doll

December 25, 2010

In the early 1900's, Vera Boyd grew up in Wards Gap, just below the Blue Ridge Parkway. Life was hard for everyone living in these mountains--but people were also generous.   In this special segment of Real People, Real Stories, guest commentator Oma Boyd learns about one man's love for a young woman by way of a Christmas treasure hidden in an old box. Vera and her husband raised 2 sons and a daughter on their small farm and apple orchard in Wards Gap. In 2004, Vera passed away at the age of 87. Her daughter-in-law, Oma looked after Vera. Oma is now writing a book preserving Vera's stories of growing up and living in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
