One Big Happy Family

December 23, 2012

StoryLine gives voice to everyday people throughout our community as they share the experiences that shape their lives. It’s a project of the ECHO network and is made possible by the generosity of Salemtowne, a continuing care retirement community, where every life shines and stories are celebrated.

In 1985, Penny and Mike Hazen lived in Forsyth County. After being unsuccessful in conceiving a baby, they tried adoption. But children’s homes in Forsyth and Guilford counties rejected the Hazen’s as adoptive parents for an infant because they were in their late 30’s.

So they stepped into the little known world of open private adoptions.
Through a letter, they shared their story and their desire to adopt a baby.

In this segment of StoryLine, Penny recounts this journey with and how it changed their lives.
