The release effectively severs all ties with the university for the junior basketball player.
Woods, a 6-foot-11 center from Rome, Ga., pleaded guilty on Sept. 30 to misdemeanor assault on a female. The assault allegedly stemmed from a Labor Day incident when Woods pushed down Courtney Lorel Barbour, the mother of Woods' 8-month-old son. Barbour is also a Wake Forest student with whom Woods lived with.
Woods was ultimately given a suspended 60-day sentence for the guilty plea, and he was suspended indefinitely from the Wake basketball program last month after his arrest.
In a released statement, Demon Deacons Head Coach Jeff Bzdelik said that he met with Woods a number of times, adding, "we felt this was the best course of action for him."
Woods averaged about five points and three rebounds in 31 games last season for the Demon Deacons.
He is expected to pursue playing in Europe.
