Winston-Salem is the only North Carolina city on the list, grabbing the tenth spot. The report acknowledges the city’s tobacco heritage and highlights its growth in high tech industries.
According to the site, the city’s low cost of living, fair climate and entertainment opportunities make it an attractive place for retirees. Betty Haywood, a resident at Arbor Acres Retirement Community said the arts district in the heart of the city is what she enjoys most.
"I enjoy crafts, the performing arts, all of them, just everything that this town offers culturally, which is a lot because I've lived in Paris, France, I've lived in Asheville and what is here is more accessible to me than any place that I've lived," said Haywood.
Other factors influencing the rankings include home prices, low tax rates and volunteer opportunities.
CNNMoney.com ranks Marquette, Michigan as the top place for people to retire. Other cities making the list include Pittsburgh, Pa., Danville, Ky., and Southaven, Miss.
