In the past, workers for the City of Winston-Salem scoured the mountains for a Christmas tree to place in Corpening Plaza for the holidays. But now, city officials are looking closer to home.
Keith Finch, director of vegetation management for the city says the change will help save money.
"It was very expensive and we had to get it shipped back down here to set up. We have tried over the last few years to see if anyone in the city would want to donate one and we are tying that again this year,” says Finch.
Finch noted, “We are looking for possibly a fir or spruce at least 50 feet tall."
A crane will be used to help remove the tree. Finch says if you think you have a tree that you would meet the criteria, take a couple of pictures and email them to citylink@cityofws.org .
"It would go to a good cause and if we decide that we would take your tree, we will remove it for free and grind the stump for free and you can start over with grass seed, so you will never know the tree was there,” says Finch.
Finch added, “There is also something good about knowing that the tree we have in Corpening Plaza is local and it came from somewhere around the city."
The deadline to submit your tree for consideration is November 9. So far, a date for the annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony has not been set.
