Winston-Salem State offers cash refunds to upset basketball fans

October 3, 2011 | Keri Brown

On Saturday, Winston-Salem State University hosted an exhibition game featuring NBA standouts such as Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant and former Wake Forest player and NBA Rookie of the Year Chris Paul.  Some ticket holders were turned away at the door.

The school said around 2,800 tickets were printed and the gymnasium holds 3,000. Nancy Young, Director of Public Relations at Winston-Salem State University, said school officials still don't know how it happened.

"We have a list of seven or eight things that could have happened. It could be any one of those or it could be a combination of one of those. It is too early to speculate and we don't know how many people. We've heard anywhere from 200-700. Some people left before we announced that we were not letting anyone else in," said Young.

The school began giving out cash refunds around 12:15 p.m. Monday. Young said the chancellor's office is investigating, and those results will deterime whether or not local law enforcement is contacted.

"One of the issues is as a state institution there's a process that we have to go through to get cash and the refunds will be in cash. We are also working to develop a process to refund folks who don't live in the area. It was homecoming weekend and we know we had some alumni with tickets who couldn't get in and who don't live in the area," said Young.

The cash refunds will be distributed at the Anderson Center on Tuesday and Wednesday from 8 a.m. through 8 p.m.
