Winston-Salem Officer's Medical Contition Takes a Turn for the WorseOctober 11, 2009 | Winston-Salem city officials say the officer injured in a shooting with an armed man has suffered a setback.
The Winston-Salem Journal reports Sgt. Mickey Hutchens' medical condition worsened late Saturday night according to city spokesman Ed McNeal.
Wednesday morning, 50-year-old Hutchens and fellow police officer Daniel Clark were shot while chasing on foot 35-year-old Monte Denard Evans.
It happened behind the Bojangles on Peters Creek Parkway in the grassy revene.
According to Police Chief Scott Cunningham, Evans shot Hutchens in the face at close range with a semi-automatic weapon. That bullet has been removed from his head and he's in critical and grave condition.
Hutchens is being treated at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Officer Clark was shot twice: in his bulletproof vest and in the upper torso. He was released from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center Friday afternoon.
Sgt. Hutchens is a 27 year veteran; Officer Clark has been on the police force for 5 years.
