Winston-Salem Centennial Plans Announced

January 16, 2013 | Keri Brown

Plans are underway to celebrate the City of Winston-Salem's 100th birthday. Mayor Allen Joines and members of the city's centennial commission announced plans for the event on Wednesday.

The centennial celebration will take place over a four day span from May 9 - 12. Ed McNeal, Director of Marketing and Communications for the city, says the festivities include a marker dedication, booths and activities in city hall, a parade and a gallery hop.

"We will have galleries with police and fire equipment, old items and photos as wells as art from kids in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System. We will have a concert and the release of a centennial beer produced by the Foothills Brewing Company," says McNeal.

A centennial documentary about the "twin city" will also premiere downtown at the A/perture Theater during the four days of activities.

McNeal says the celebration will give residents a chance to learn more about the history behind the hyphenated city.

"There aren't many other cities around the country that are hyphenated, in fact I think there is only one other major city with a hyphen in the name. It means something."

McNeal says "There is a story behind how we ended up with one place called one place and we think that is where people will find the documentary is going to be very appealing to people and they will learn more about the community that they already love."

The community is also encouraged to submit photos and stories about their experiences in the city online through a new Centennial Website .
