WSSU Students Brave the Cold to Help Homeless
November 18, 2011 |
Friday night, members of the Delta Alpha chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity at Winston-Salem State University will sleep outside. This is the 15th year of their annual campaign against homelessness. Senior and event organizer Anton Jones says the group's actions aim to help other students have a taste of one of the hardships homeless people deal with. Tonight at 6:00, members of Phi Beta Sigma will set up camp at WSSU's Clock Tower, where they will remain until 6:00 a.m. Saturday. To stay warm, the men are building a cardboard house filled with blankets and sleeping bags where all of the participants will stay. Their goal is to collect $1,500 in cash along with 1,500 pounds of food and non-perishable items. Clothes will be donated to the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission; food items will be given to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina; and the money will go to the Samaritan Ministries Annual Penny Campaign. In 2010, Phi Beta Sigma collected 31 boxes of clothing and shoes, 617 pounds of food items, and $381.75 in cash.
