Two Guilford County incumbents made a strong showing in the North Carolina Primary. North Carolina State House Representative Marcus Brandon easily beat challenger Earl Jones 66% vs. 33.8%.
Brandon represents District 60, and he says redistricting made campaigning more difficult. "I have really super progressives. I still represent the poorest zip code in North Carolina which has all of the social ills that comes out of that - so I have to communicate what we have to do to get the results we need to move that community forward," explains Brandon.
Meanwhile, early in the evening, North Carolina State Senator Gladys Robinson led over challenger Guilford County Commissioner Bruce Davis. Robinson represents District 28. She won almost 72% of the vote. Davis won 28%. She says the redistricting by Republicans did more harm than good. "The redistricting process cut up Pleasant Garden. So my district before was pretty diverse in terms of races and had a good balance of Democrats and Republicans. But I want people to know I represent everybody," says Robinson.
Robinson says the redistricting also hurt fellow Democrat Don Von from grabbing a Senate seat. According to the Guilford County Board of Elections, about 35% of registered voters cast ballots during yesterday's primary - about 118,000 voters.
