Triad natives and their children die in New York area plane crash

December 21, 2011 | Keri Brown

A Winston-Salem native and his family were killed Tuesday morning when their small plane spiraled out of control and crashed on a major New York-area highway. All five people aboard the plane were killed including Jeffrey Buckalew, 45, his wife Corrine a Greensboro native, their son Jackson, 11 and their daughter Meriwether, 6.

Buckalew, was a managing director at the New York investment banking firm Greenhill & Co. Another managing partner at the firm also died in the crash.

On Wednesday afternoon,WFDD's Keri Brown spoke with Jeffrey’s father, Dr. Vardaman Buckalew from his home in Winston-Salem. Buckalew says his son was flying the plane and they were on their way to visit his wife’s family for Christmas in Tennessee.

Jeffrey Buckalew's wife Corrine is an alumna of Page High School, which is in Greensboro.

Dr. Buckalew says the family cannot make funeral arrangements until the New Jersey medical examiner completes the investigation.
