Traffic tie-ups expected this weekend in Winston-Salem

September 30, 2011 | Keri Brown

Several downtown streets will be shut down Saturday morning for a parade to celebrate Winston-Salem State University's homecoming.

Patricia Norris, Police Chief at Winston-Salem State University, said motorists are advised to exercise patience.

"We have the parade that is in the downtown area that will alter traffic patterns in the downtown area on Saturday October 1 from 8:00 A.M. until about 1:00 P.M.,” said Norris.

Heavy traffic will also take place most of the day and evening on Saturday on Martin Luther King Junior Drive and U.S.52 because of the Winston-Salem State Football game and the NBA game that is being held on campus at 7:00 P.M.

“We have also put in place some alternate transportation routes from the stadium to the gym where the game will be played and if people want to they can leave their vehicles parked at the stadium and walk over to the basketball game. It is not that far and it will give them time to cool off after the football game and get ready for the basketball game,” said Norris.

Norris advises people to enter the Winston-Salem State campus on the East or West side for both games.
