The Marriage of Roads, Bridges and Art
October 20, 2011 |
October 20th, Creative Corridors unveiled its master plan for Winston-Salem's roads and bridges. Members of the non-profit hosted a free party open to the public at the BB&T Ballfield. On the jumbo screen, they showed residents numerous concepts. According to coordinator Jennifer Kiger, the group has given 100 design concepts to the North Carolina Department of Transportation and this entity has the final say of the designs used. The Winston-Salem bridges and gateways involved in this project include Business 40, US Highway 52, Martin Luther King Boulevard, Broad Street, part of Peter's Creek Parkway and the Salem Connector. Close to half a million dollars has been raised to fund this initiative, including $200,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts. Kiger says supporters of this project see it as an investment, helping Winston-Salem live up the name, 'City of the Arts' while growing its economy. And the celebration continues Sunday, October 23rd. At 3 p.m., Creative Corridors will host Tour de Winston. People will walk in the area where bridges are being re-imagined through this initiative. Cost for Tour de Winston is $10. Children 12 and under are free.
