The History of Juneteenth

June 19, 2008 | Bradley George

June 19th is a day also known as Juneteenth. It was on this date in 1865 that Union Army troops arrived in Galveston, Texas with news the Civil War had ended and all slaves were now free. Juneteenth celebrations are being held throughout the US today and this weekend. It's a time for African Americans to remember the painful legacy of slavery, while recognizing the progress made in the past 140 years. WFDD's Bradley George spoke with African American historian Mel White about the origins and importance of Juneteenth.
