Susan L. Taylor Promotes More Mentoring

People living in Winston-Salem now have two new ways to help those who are struggling in this city. During a Tuesday afternoon luncheon, Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of Essence Magazine Susan L. Taylor first described Feeding Dreams Get Together. It's a national initiative by the food company, General Mills. Small groups organize and come up with positive ways they can influence the health and education of people in their community. Earlier in the program, Taylor presented the 2011-2012 Winston-Salem Feeding Dreams Outstanding Mom award to Dr. Pamela Dockery-Howard. This is connected with General Mills' national mission to recognize African American mothers for uplifting their family and others in their community.

The second national program is Taylor's personal effort, the National Cares Mentoring Movement. It recruits adults who work with disadvantaged children in their area. And Friday, Taylor is taking her campaign to the White House. According to Taylor, a mid-sized church outside of East Saint Louis is actually doing this and is proof this model keeps children in school. Taylor says one of the movement's goals is to increase high school graduation rates among African American students.
