State Representative Larry Womble is Responding to Stimuli, say Baptist PhysiciansDecember 5, 2011 | North Carolina State Representative Larry Womble is recovering from several broken bones after being in a deadly head-on collision. He's being treated at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. According to his attending physicians, his vital signs are stable but he remains in critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit.
Family spokeswoman Tanya Wiley says the 70-year-old is not talking but he is responsive. She says he recognizes the voices of family and friends. And when his hand is squeezed, he squeezes back. The Winston-Salem Democrat has represented the 71st District of Forsyth County in the state House since 1995.
The accident happened Friday night about 11 p.m. in the 2600 block of Reynolds Park Road. Investigators report 54-year-old David Allen Carmichael of Winston-Salem was driving the other car, a convertible. He collided with Womble's sedan and died in the crash. Carmichael leaves behind a son, a grandson and a granddaughter. Representative Womble was rushed into surgey. According to Wiley, the Womble and Carmichael families are friends.
