Senator Edwards Can Hire New Attornies

March 15, 2012 |

Former North Carolina Senator John Edwards has won the right to hire the same attorneys who represented his mistress. Thursday, he won court permission to use them at his criminal trial. He's charged with using more than $925,000 in contributions to hide his 2008 affair with campaign film-maker Rielle Hunter.

Alan Duncan and Allison Van Laningham represented Hunter in a separate lawsuit agains Edwards aid Andrew Young and his wife. Hunter sued to have her alleged sex tape with Edwards returned to her. She won the case. Prosecutors objected to the participation of the lawyers, saying there could be a conflict of interest should Hunter be called as a witness.

Edwards' criminal trial begins next month.
