River Baptisms Fuel New Fire
April 6, 2010 |
For generations, churches across the Piedmont have gone down to the Yadkin River and its many tributaries. Congregations are drawn by a burning desire to carry on the Christian tradition of River Baptisms.
Meet members of Bear Creek Baptist Church and Poplar Springs Baptist Church. Young and old believe by fully submerging their body into the water the sins of their ‘old man’ are symbolically washed away.
Many are inspired to do this because of Christ Jesus’ river baptism. Others say they feel the presence of God while surrounded by nature’s beauty. And those in attendance lift their voices by singing traditional Southern hymns. This celebration renews faith, spiritual strength and hope.
