Pulitzer Center's Campus Consortium Comes to the Triad

April 2, 2012 | David Ford

International journalism departments are being severely cut or entirely wiped out at major newspapers and television networks all over the world. These include The Chicago Tribune, Philadelphia Inquirer, and L.A. Times just to name a few. Meanwhile, The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, a Washington, DC,-based nonprofit, continues to support the cause of international reporting by bringing top foreign correspondents to schools.

The program is called the Campus Consortium, and the goal is to raise the visibility of international reporting and encourage a new generation of journalists. Pulitzer Center Executive Director John Sawyer grew up here in the Triad, and Wake Forest University Journalism Program Director Justin Catanoso saw a perfect fit.

He has invited contributing writer for The New York Times Magazine and National Geographic Cynthia Gorney to North Carolina. While in the Triad visiting campuses at Wake Forest University, Guilford College, and High Point University, and sharing her experiences with future foreign correspondents, Gorney will also discuss her award-winning story for National Geographic with the general public. The forum will be Wake Forest University’s Voices of Our Time discussion and question-and-answer session.

Catanoso says he hopes the Campus Consortium of the Pulitzer Center helps promote regional cooperation by having three Triad schools work closely together.

The Voices of Our Time discussion and Q & A begins at 6:30pm Tuesday night at Brendle Recital Hall. The event is free and open to the public.

Catanoso recently spoke with WFDD's David Ford about the consortium, and Gorney's award-winning National Geographic story Too Young to Wed: Uncovering the Secret World of Child Brides in the Middle East, Asia and Africa.
