State Rep. Earline Parmon, D-Forsyth, became the first black state senator from Forsyth County after she collected 73 percent of the vote Tuesday to win the N.C. Senate District 32 seat against Republican Reginald Reid, according to complete but unofficial results. Reid had 27 percent of the ballots.

Parmon will serve a two-year term, succeeding Sen. Linda Garrou, who isn’t running for re-election.

She attended a Democratic victory party at the Millennium Center in downtown Winston-Salem Tuesday night. Parmon thanked her supporters and said she’s looking forward to using her legislative experience to help newly-elected House members. She says she also plans to tackle issues like voter identification and healthcare.

68 year-old Parmon, served 12 years as a Forsyth County commissioner and has spent 10 years as a member of the N.C. House. She is the founder and former executive director of LIFT Academy Inc., a charter school.
