Obama Administration Rolls Out New Career Tools for Veterans
November 7, 2011 |
According to the White House, the unemployment rate of veterans as of October 2011 is 12.1%. As a result, the Obama Administration is rolling out a new series of job search tools veterans can use. And several initiatives take advantage of current technology. One is a website called, MyNextMove.org. It enables veterans to identify civilian jobs that need the skills they developed while serving in the military. Another is a Veterans job bank search tool that identifies employers who are actively hiring veterans. One White House spokesman explains there's little to no development cost connected with these initiatives because they are using open web standards that are already being used by the private sector, such as Monster.com and Indeed.com. Another effort is in the form of a new gold card. It connects Veterans with a case manager for six months at service centers. The counselor then plugs the service person into a range of training and support resources. While the White House has not released the price tag for these initiatives, spokespersons say the Department of Labor is providing these initiatives with existing funds.
