North Carolina Senators Approve Fracking Bill

June 21, 2012 |

Legislation to legalize fracking in North Carolina is now in the hands of Governor Beverly Perdue. Today, Senate members passed the bill 29-to-15 to legalize and develop regulations for the hydraulic procedure. Fracking involves injecting a drilled well with chemicals, water and sand to crack shale rock and release natural gas. Area opponents say they worry effective safe guards will not be used to protect people and the environment. A spokesman for the governor says Governor Perdue has received thousands of emails and phone calls overwhelmingly against it. She has 10 days to consider a veto.
