North Carolina State House of Representative Marcus Brandon easily beat challenger Earl Jones in the primary election May 8th. Brandon represents NC’s district 60.
Last night was the second time the two Democrats faced off. Two years ago, Brandon took the seat from Jones, the former state senator.
Brandon is openly gay, and says he had to walk the proverbial tightrope, campaigning for his seat while also trying to defeat the proposed constitutional amendment which defines the only domestic legal union as the marriage between a man and a woman.
"I incorporated in my message in terms of equal opportunity and equal access in terms of how we deal with one another. Regardless of how you feel about the lesbian/gay community or homosexuals that's not who we are as people. We don't treat people different because they are different. You don't tell people they can have rights these rights and tells others they can't have the same rights," says Brandon.
In November, voters will get another chance to decide if they want to send Brandon back to the State House.
Meanwhile -- by a slim victory -- Guilford County voters voted in favor of the proposed constitutional amendment. More than 58,520 supported the measure. Those opposing: 58,448.
