NC Supreme Court to hear redistricting case

Litigation over North Carolina's redistricting maps is about to go before the state Supreme Court, but the arguments won't be on the map boundaries just yet. The justices plan to hear oral arguments Tuesday about whether correspondence and documents between Republican legislative leaders and taxpayer-funded outside attorneys must be given to groups and voters who sued to challenge the legality of the maps.

Those who sued allege that all redistricting documents must be released. The attorneys for the Legislature say some documents are still protected by attorney-client privilege.

The case may give the map challengers more information they hope will bolster their case to strike down the maps. Media groups and the North Carolina Open Government Coalition have filed court briefs asking justices to require that more documents be released.
