NC Senate Discussing Proposals to End State Income Taxes

January 23, 2013 | Audrey Fannin

Gov. Pat McCrory's top budget officer says he has "great concerns" about an idea floated at the Legislature to eliminate North Carolina's personal and corporate income taxes and apply the sales tax to many more services.

Deputy Budget Director Art Pope is part of a working group recommending ideas to the new governor on tax reform. Pope says it's his personal opinion that shifting the burden more to broad-based consumption taxes would be regressive and essentially double-tax older adults who paid income taxes and saved for retirement. McCrory's campaign platform focused on reducing income tax rates to be competitive with those in neighboring states.
