NC DOT Prepares for Another Winter Blast

January 24, 2013 | Kathryn Mobley

North Carolina Department of Transportation is busy preparing the roads for snow and ice.  According to The National Weather Service, light snow possibly mixed with sleet is expected to quickly move across the Triad Friday afternoon.

Communications Officer Amanda Perry says trucks have been on the roads since this morning, spreading a salt brine solution, especially on bridges and ramps. “Brine is a salt water mixture and if you put it down on pavement prior to precipitation it will prevent snow and ice from bonding to the pavement. So it’s a very proactive treatment for winter weather preparation and it’s cost effective.” Perry says 40,000 tons of salt is required to respond to freezing sleet or ice statewide. An inch of snow accumulation is possible Friday afternoon.
