Mount Airy Quadruple Homicide

November 2, 2009 | David Ford

More details are emerging about the suspect of a deadly Triad shooting.

Marcos Chavez Gonzalez is in custody across statelines at this hour. He's alleged to have shot and killed four men at a store in Mount Airy yesterday afternoon. The incident took place in the parking lot of Woods TV in Mount Airy.

In 2002 Gonzalez was convicted of kidnapping a minor. He served four years in prison and was released in 2007. State records show the felony kidnapping charge required Gonzalez to register as a sex offender. North Carolina's post-release supervision of Gonzalez ended last November, according to Correction Department spokesman Keith Acree. Now, Gonzalez is charged with four counts of murder.

Police in Mount Airy, say he was arrested early this morning (Monday) at a motel in Henry County, about 50 miles northeast of Mount Airy near the state line. He was arrested without incident after being at large for about 12 hours..

The Mount Airy News reports that the four victims are hispanic males and were all shot by a high powered rifle, possibly an assault rifle.

Police do not believe the shootings were random, but Mount Airy Police Chief Dale Watson said they did not plan to release a motive. The News and Record is reporting that Jose Armando Hernandez, 46, said through a translator that three of the victims were his nephews. He said his family is "destroyed" over the deaths, which he said stemmed from a problem with a woman. Police would not confirm that or identify the victims.Gonzalez, 29, was arrested without incident at a motel about 50 miles northeast of the town, Henry County, Va., Sheriff Lane Perry said today (Monday). Gonzalez was unarmed when he surrendered just before 4 a.m. to officers who had surrounded the motel. The victims' names are being withheld because their families have not all been notified. All four lived in Surry County. Gonzalez could be extradited as early as today ...
