The Reynolda House Museum of American Art in Winston-Salem
was one of just a handful of museums in the country to acquire the Modern
Masters exhibition from the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C.
The collection of 43 key paintings and sculptures by over 30 of the most celebrated artists of the 1950s opened on Friday, October 7, with interactive options for viewers including “Looking Aloud Gallery Discoveries” where the public was encouraged to share their thoughts on the art in real time with Reynolda House art historians.
Reynolda House’s Allison Slaby says Modern (from about 1860 to 1970) artists such as Josef Albers, Franz Kline and Robert Motherwell felt that art did not have to reproduce reality as we perceive it visually. Their combined work moved the center of the artistic world from Paris to New York.
Modern Masters from the Smithsonian American Art Museum will
remain on display at Reynolda House in Winston-Salem through December 31.
"Modern Thursdays" will extend evening hours until 8 p.m. on Thursday nights Oct.13-Nov. 3. The gatherings will feature unique interactive programs each week.
