North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Pat McCrory won't sue over two attack ads over his involvement with a Charlotte company.
Last month, the Democratic Governors Association and North Carolina Citizens for Progress Citizens for Progress launched an attack ad suggesting that McCrory used his position as Mayor of Charlotte to help online financial site Tree.com in exchange to for a lucrative seat on the company's board. On May 24th, McCrory filed notice that he planned to sue over the commercial, calling statements in the ad "fraudulent and defamatory." But the campaign never followed up, and Monday, the deadline passed for the campaign to file a full complaint.
McCrory campaign spokesman Brian Nick said recently there was no reason to file a lawsuit because the ad isn't running now, so the issues are moot. Tuesday, Nick told WRAL-TV that the campaign decided before Memorial Day not to move forward with a lawsuit. Democrats say McCrory never planned to sue and filed the notice to get media attention.
For its part, N.C. Citizens for Progress has sued McCrory and his campaign. It wants a judge to rule that the commercials were truthful.
