Kybele

March 21, 2007 | Audrey Fannin

A group of North Carolina doctors is working around the world to improve the safety of women and infants during childbirth. Medge Owen, Associate Professor of Obstetric Anesthesiology at Wake Forest University, was inspired to start Kybele in 2001 after her experience as a Fulbright Scholar in Turkey, where she developed an obstetric anesthesia unit. The organization's name comes from the ancient Anatolian goddess of fertility and childbirth - a figurine even portrays her giving birth. Dr. Owen visited WFDD after a recent trip to Egypt, where she was exploring setting up a Kybele project in Cairo.
