King Gave Prelude to 'I Have a Dream' Speech at Wake Forest University

February 27, 2003 | Stephanie Martin

Martin Luther King, Jr. tested out a very famous phrase at Wake Forest University.

King spoke the words "Free at last, free at last, thank God almighty we are free at last" to an audience in the University's Wait Chapel. Those words became famous when King spoke them the following summer during his "I Have a Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial.

Audio of the speech, which was recorded by WFDD in 1962, has now been added to the University's digital archives at Z. Smith Reynolds Library.

Stephanie Martin reported the details for WFDD News in February, 2003.
