Invest in Education and the Economy Will Grow
October 18, 2011 |
Americans need to invest more in our nation's education system. This is one of the key points President Barack Obama made Tuesday morning in Jamestown. He spoke about the importance of a strong public education system and described teachers as a great resource. He addressed his comments to more than 1,300 at the Ragsdale YMCA on the campus of Guilford Technical Community College. According to the President, a healthier education system will help the country compete internationally and ultimately strengthen the nation's economy. This is part of his 3-day bus tour across western North Carolina and parts of Virginia promoting the American Jobs Act. For seven years, Tanika Harris taught kindergarten in Guilford County. Now this 35-year-old owns a Greensboro daycare center for children. She says since April, she's actually hired 6 employees and her business is steadily growing. But she realizes this is not the case for everyone.
35-year-old George Ragsdale owns and operates a real estate company in the Triad. He says he wants President Obama and the Congress to do more to put people back to work. Both Ragsdale and Harris say they plan to closely read President Obama's job plan an the new one Republican senators have just released, to see which plan will help their businesses thrive in the coming years. This afternoon, President Obama will continue his bus tour into Virginia. He'll stop at a high school in Emporia and at a military base in Hampton.
